Biography and Research Interests
Dr. Kirkwood is the founding Chair and Professor of Oral Health Sciences in the College of Dental Medicine and a Professor in Microbiology and Immunology in the College of Medicine. He also serves as Associate Dean for Research and Director for the MUSC Center for Oral Health Research. Dr. Kirkwood co-directs T-COHR (Training in Craniofacial and Oral Health Research) that includes the Dental Scientist Training Program (DMD/PhD). His research program is focused on host-immune responses and innate immune signaling as it relates to inflammatory bone loss and head and neck cancer progression.
Dr. Kirkwood has collaborated and trained with several dentist-scientists from Brazil, Korea, China, and Italy.
