Pediatric Residency Elective

Arusha, Tanzania
Back to projects

Although the city of Arusha is a popular tourist attraction, Tanzania is one of the 10 poorest countries in the world. The hospital and the Arusha Town Clinic treat approximately 50,000 outpatients a year at a cost to the patient of $3 per visit. Inpatient costs are about $5 per day.  The government’s annual expenditure on health is less than $2 per capita.

Andrea Summer, M.D. first visited Selian Lutheran Hospital in Arusha, Tanzania in 2004.  Since then, she has set up an official agreement between MUSC and Selian Luthern that allows students and trainees to participate in electives at Selian and receive credit.  This program allows residents to develop some autonomy in medical decision making and to learn to work in an area with limited resources and in a different cultural context.
