Biography and Research Interests
Dr. Deborah Williamson is Associate Dean for Practice and an Associate Professor in the College of Nursing. Dr. Williamson has 27 years of experience as a practicing nurse-midwife in a private office setting in Mt. Pleasant, SC. Dr. Williamson specializes in Community based participatory research predominantly working with the Hispanic community. Dr. Williamson teaches in the Presidential Scholars program at MUSC, an interdisciplinary curriculum that focuses on health disparities. She is a member of the National Academies of Practice and is the recipient of the Palmetto Gold Award for nursing.
Dr. Williamson is part of the Hispanic Health Initiative, which focuses on both professional education and community outreach for the Latino population in South Carolina. Outreach programs include Abrazos, a family literacy program, and PASOs, a program designed to improve the health and well being of the Hispanic community through education and linking families to services. The professional education program (HHI Scholars) was designed to build cultural competency, increase sensitivity to community needs, improve the ability to tailor care, and provide the leadership skills necessary for MUSC graduates to address the social determinants of health in order to help eliminate health disparities.
